Dirty on Purpose was a four-piece band from Brooklyn, NY, whose music is often described as indie pop or shoegaze. Composed of Doug Marvin (drums, vocals), Joseph Jurewicz (guitar, vocals), George Wilson (guitar, vocals) and DJ Boudreau (bass guitar), the band formed in 2002 and started playing around New York. The band's music is guitar-oriented with alternating male and female vocals. The fuzzed-out guitar work is also reminiscent of '90s bands such as My Bloody Valentine and the Jesus and Mary Chain.

Release history

The band self-released its critically acclaimed EP, Sleep Late For a Better Tomorrow, in 2004 and re-released it on North Street Records in 2005. In 2006, Dirty on Purpose released the full-length debut, Hallelujah Sirens, on North Street Records. After critical praise from publications like Pitchfork Media,[1] Entertainment Weekly, NPR,[2] Allmusic, Filter, Spin,[3] Alternative Press and more, Hallelujah Sirens was nominated for "Best Indie Rock Album" at the 2007 PLUG Independent Music Awards. The band also co-hosted an episode of MTV2's alternative music show, "Subterranean," with host Jim Shearer, which premiered the band's music videos for "Light Pollution," "No Radio" and "Mind Blindness." In 2008, Dirty on Purpose released a second EP, Like Bees featuring guest female vocals from Jaymay and Holly Miranda. The band then released a free digital-only EP called Dead Volcanoes on RCRDLBL.com.

Dirty on Purpose has performed in music festivals like SXSW, the CMJ Music Marathon, Siren Music Festival, South Street Seaport Music Festival, San Diego Street Scene, Pop Montreal, North East Sticks Together, and more. The band also appeared in-studio for radio performances at KEXP, WOXY and Indie 103.1. Throughout the band's career, Dirty on Purpose has played with bands including Arcade Fire, the Decemberists, The Besnard Lakes, Band of Horses, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, the Album Leaf, the Thermals, Earlimart, Say Hi To Your Mom and Fujiya & Miyagi.

Promotion

"Audience in the Room" was featured in a Virgin Mobile TV commercial. "Kill Our City" was featured in 'Shark' on CBS. "Always Looking" was featured on 'Cane' on CBS. "No Radio" was featured on MTV's 'Human Giant'. Songs such as "Girls and Sunshine", "Spider Eyes" and "All New Friends" have been featured on the 'Laguna Beach: the Real Orange County' MTV show in 2005.

Breakup

On December 5, 2008, Dirty On Purpose posted a blog through their MySpace stating "...we're going our separate ways". They said they weren't interested in recording another album, but are still making music. They didn't cite any specific reason for the split up. The band goes on to say that their tour with A Place To Bury Strangers will be their last saying, "...we thought it was an appropriate way to wind things down and say goodbye to our friends and fans.".
